My Professional Route
40 years in the making and a journey worth taking
For four decades, I have been a student of the human story and a champion for literacy. This journey has taken me from classrooms to doctoral research, but the destination has always been the same: helping others find the words to change their lives.
Financial Aid Advisor & Academic Advisor
1986-2006
While at Broward Community College and Florida International University, I rose from office assistant to advisor. As a Financial Aid Advisor, I assisted learners in securing the funds necessary to complete their education. As an Academic Advisor, I guided students along their best academic paths. These roles provided me with deep insight into the unique needs and challenges adult learners face.
Doctoral Researcher & Practitioner
2015-2017
Specialized in Reading and Literacy, focusing on how adult learners acquire and refine language skills. This deep academic foundation allows me to identify the “why” behind learning challenges and provide evidence-based solutions.

Doctoral Spotlight: The Science of Literacy
Bridging the Gap Between Research and Practice
My work in Reading and Literacy isn’t just academic—it’s the heartbeat of Routes to Knowledge. During my doctoral studies, I focused on the intricate ways the adult brain processes language, specifically looking at how we can move past old learning plateaus to reach new levels of fluency.
What this means for you:
Evidence-Based Methods: I don’t use “one-size-fits-all” lessons. Every strategy I share is rooted in the latest literacy research.
Addressing the Root Cause: Instead of just correcting mistakes, I help you understand the patterns behind them, making your learning more permanent.
Empowerment through Understanding: My research taught me that when a learner understands the how and why of English, their confidence grows as fast as their skills.
“Literacy is more than just reading words on a page; it’s about unlocking your ability to navigate the world with a voice that is uniquely yours.” — Dr. Brenda J. Washington
